Destination Guide

Destination: Cancun

Cancun on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula might have the reputation as a party town for college and high-school students on spring break, but there's so much more in this destination. It is Mexico's largest resort region, attracting roughly 3 million tourists annually, so there's an endless parade of entertainment for all ages.

Count golf high on the list.

The El Camaleon at Mayakoba Golf Club, a Greg Norman course from 2005, hosts the PGA Tour annually. Norman's other area course is the Playa Mujeres Golf Club, located within 930 tropical acres of Playa Mujeres Resort.

The Golf Club at the Moon Palace delivers 27 holes of Jack Nicklaus golf where the environment was first priority. In 2008, Nicklaus opened the Riviera Cancun with ocean views on holes 14 and 15.

Many other architects -- Robert Trent Jones Jr. (27 holes and an executive nine at Riviera Maya Golf Club), Robert von Hagge (The Golf Club at Playacar), P.B. Dye (Iberostar Playa Paraíso Golf Club) and Nick Price (Grand Coral Golf Club) -- give golfers choices and variety.

Away from the course, golfers can get pampered at all-inclusive resorts, where guests can revel in the beach, boating, fishing, water sports such as parasailing and water skiing, spa, tennis and more. Every major chain -- Ritz-Carlton, Marriott, Hilton, Iberostar, Dreams, Fairmont, Palace Resorts -- has a presence and their own unique charms.

Touring archaeological sites around Cancun -- try El Rey, Yamil Lu'um, Chichen Itza, Tulum and Coba -- remains the No. 1 attraction. The Xel-Ha is a natural aquarium considered the largest aquarium in the world. This water theme park offers swimming with the dolphins, snorkeling and more.

Day trips to Cozumel, Playa del Carmen or the nature reserve of Sian Ka'an are easily doable for adventurous vacationers.

Walking inside the Grand Hotel at the Iberostar Playa Paraiso Resort feels a bit like slipping down the rabbit hole and landing in a lap of Alice-in-Wonderland luxury. There's a new sight to behold in every direction, a stark contrast to the desert surroundings guests see on the 45-minute ride from the Cancun International Airport. And the best is still to come. The salt-water infinity pool and beach at the back of the property are where people worship the sun god, much like the Mayans did centuries before. So this is what they call paradise.

You won't find an architect better suited to design golf courses in Mexico and the Caribbean than P.B. Dye. Dye loves to shape wild mounds and undulating greens, and that philosophy served him well at the Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club in the Riviera Maya south of Cancun. The course is another strong amenity of the Iberostar Playa Paraiso Resort.

  • Iberostar Cancun Golf Club - hole 1 Photo gallery: Iberostar Cancun resort is the newest all-inclusive on the Yucatan Peninsula

Just 15 minutes from the Cancun Airport, the Iberostar Cancun resort sits right on a beautiful beach adjacent to the Iberostar Cancun Golf Club. The resort delivers all the spoils of the Iberostar brand, notably the five-star buffet and four restaurants, a pool and water sports at the beach, and a theater with a variety of shows. And since it's all paid for upfront, you might as well sit back and spoil yourself.

  • Cancun Golf Club Cancun golf soon among Caribbean's best

Cancun may be famous for leisurely family getaways, ritzy business conventions and notorious teenage spring break friskiness. But when it comes to golf, it's an afterthought, right? Not so fast. Right now, Cancun has a handful of worthy courses, albeit kept relatively under the radar in comparison to its traditional fun-in-the-sun image. But within the next few years Cancun is set to explode into a Caribbean golf mecca.
