Robert Trent Jones Jr. set to revamp the fun Cabo Real Golf Club

The loss of a seaside hole would ruin most courses, but Cabo Real Golf Club, located at the tip of Mexico's Baja Peninsula, just might have the personality and charm to pull it off without much backlash.

That's how special the routing by Robert Trent Jones Jr., dating to 1993, really is. The beachfront par-3 15th hole has been sold for redevelopment, forcing a Jones redesign of the back nine in the summer of 2012.

Jones will move the 14th green left along the beach and closer to the shore to help offset the loss. The par-4 16th hole that climbs away from the beach will be converted into the new 15th hole, an uphill 190-yard par 3. The new 16th hole, a 170-yard par 3, is being constructed across the street near the 17th and 18th holes.

Cabo Real Head Professional Juan Carlos Castellanos said the changes are a positive, although the 7,037-yard layout will lose a stroke and play as a par 71.

The front nine -- considered the toughest loop in Los Cabos -- still affords the majestic views of the Sea of Cortez golfers crave. These holes climb into the mountains with gulches and arroyos collecting every errant shot.

The finished product should be completed by late October, 2012.

"Most customers are repeat customers. They want something new,” Castellanos said of the redesign.
